“You know Mom and Dad are getting restless. They want to meet Brittany and Grady,” Maddy whispers, leaning close before the start of Sunday service.

I groan knowing she’s right. “Maddy, hold them off. I’m taking this slow. Uber slow. It’s amazing she even invited us to his birthday party.” Maddy looks at me with sympathy. “Help me, Mads. I don’t want to blow this by going too fast. We just did her parents. Let’s let things settle a minute before another ‘meet the parents.’”

To my great relief, Maddy nods. “Send me the picture of you two fishing. That should hold them off a little longer. I’ll try explaining to Mom again.”

I squeeze her hand, whispering back, “Thanks, Mads.” Then I remember my reason for cornering her. “So, what’s with you and Derek?”

Maddy turns large, round eyes to me and says, too innocently, “What do you mean?”

“Come on. Everyone saw you circling each other like cats in heat, Maddy,” I say obviously.

She blushes deep red. “They did not. I do not circle,” she hisses in haughty outrage.

I stare at her knowingly.

She cracks, just a little. “I noticed him, if that’s what you mean. I’m not even sure we spoke directly to each other, though.”

I keep staring.

“Fine, we talked, but he didn’t even ask for my number,” she huffs.

I watch her closely. Is she disappointed?

“You okay, Mads?” I ask in concern.

“I’m fine,” she says brusquely, then she sighs, “I’m thinking about coming home.”

“What? I thought you loved Atlanta?” I ask in surprise.

“I did. I’m a little tired of the scene now, though. Don’t tell Mom and Dad. I haven’t decided yet, and no way am I moving back in with them,” she says sternly.

“Whatever you need, Mads, you know I’m here. You can stay with me if you want,” I offer.

She smiles at me and mouths “thanks” as the service starts and our conversation is effectively cut off.
